Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights

Every person, in every generation, deserves the right to clean water, clean air, a healthy environment, and a stable climate. Period. And it is the duty of the government to preserve, protect, and enforce this right.

However, current environmental law in Maryland falls short of this and leaves us stranded.

The Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights is about establishing the protection of these rights through three avenues:

  • a state constitutional amendment, the greatest protection,
  • legislation, and
  • regulatory policies

These combined efforts seek to address these three goals:

  • environmental health,
  • public health, and
  • environmental justice.

Environmental Health

We only have one planet that we call home. Environmental health is about taking care of our climate, air, water, soil, plants, animal, and marine life that we need to sustain our human life. Our stewardship is essential to the health of both people and the planet.

The Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights supports actions that help protect the health of the environment in Maryland for the health of the people who live in Maryland.

Public Health

Marylanders can only be as healthy as the environment in which they live. Maryland public health data reveals the health disparities among those who have increased exposure to pollution, including higher rates of asthma hospitalizations, heart attacks, and cancer. Public health is personal health uncompromised by human-induced environmental degradation.

The Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights supports actions that address the systemic environmental root causes of health disparities.

Environmental Justice

Racial justice requires environmental justice. Everyone regardless of race, income, or zip code deserves a healthy environment to be able to live and thrive. Environmental justice is the assurance that there is equity in all environmental decisions and outcomes.

The Maryland Campaign for Environmental Human Rights supports environmental justice action that will close the equity gap in Maryland’s environmental laws and policy.
